What is Van Smart?

The Van Smart course focuses on driving in urban areas and specifically vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians.

Vulnerable roads users include cyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians (in particular children and the elderly), as well as horse riders. Pedestrians can dash into the road unexpectedly, have difficulty hearing or seeing traffic, or have disability or mobility issues, putting them at increased risk. Motorcyclists and cyclists are also extremely vulnerable and are most at risk at junctions, as they can be difficult to see in vehicle blind spots.

Van Smart is an essential training course providing van drivers with the knowledge, skills and defensive driving techniques to deal with the ever increasing challenges of driving within the busy urban environment. The course introduces various vehicle technologies that are available to detect the presence of vulnerable road users in close proximity of vehicles and help drivers avoid incidents.

Course Objectives:

  • To equip the drivers with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to plan and prepare themselves for driving
  • To identify road users who are vulnerable and why

  • To highlight a driver’s responsibilities

  • To familiarise van drivers to the issues a vulnerable road user may face on public roads (on-cycle practical module)
